Geriatric Massage
Geriatric massage, with its focus on the elderly, addresses the psychological and physiological aspects of aging and its associated diseases. Bodywork, often limited to a shorter time span, is performed in residential care facilities, assisted living and (if they are still able to care for them selves) in their own homes.
While similar in technique to other forms of massage, geriatric massage considers the special needs of the elderly. The specialty trained practitioner knows about positioning for greatest comfort and will often have the client rest in the same position for the entire massage. Mobility challenges may dictate the massage be done in a bed or wheelchair. The therapist may also work both sides of the body to enhance body awareness, or only work hands and feet, if the client prefers. Sessions may be limited to 30 to 45 minutes, as older clients often do better with shorter, more frequent, massages.
Almost 35 million Americans are 65 or older, and about 2,000 more reach this age every day. As the U.S. Demographic shifts to an older population, it's important to find ways of helping our elderly maintain their health and vitality. Massage for seniors is gaining importance as an alternative therapy to increase quality of life, and many massage therapists are getting special training to better serve this growing population, and lets face it...we will all be there some day, God willing!
The geriatric massage therapist is aware of health issues associated with aging and how to safely work with this type of client and with associated physicians. Consequently, the practitioner is able to individualize the massage service based on the client's health, mobility, and comfort level.
The massage treatment provides them comfort and can reduce anxiety they may have. The tender touch in the massage also helps them to fulfill their emotional requirements and this shows great results in controlling blood pressure and heart rates.
Geriatric massage therapy helps in providing harmony between mind and the body and helps the elderly to enjoy life with greater health and comfort.
Geriatric massage shows great results by providing massage to the hands and the feet for the patients suffering from paralysis. There are numerous benefits of geriatric massage in decreasing the stiffness in the muscles of the body, reducing the inflammation, and restoring the muscle deterioration. It also helps greatly to provide effective treatment for the respiratory ailments like asthma and chronic inflammation in the chest. It also shows great results for emphysema.
It helps in providing emotional comfort to senior people and the tender human touch helps them recover psychologically from a wide variety of cognitive problems. It can be used as a preventive therapy with other therapy to show better results. If the patient is already under treatment, adding massage therapy along with other wellness programs and diet increases the all around effectiveness.
Massage therapy can add to the quality of a seniors life, both physically and emotionally. Consider booking an appointment for someone you love, and make a difference in their life.
